About Us

Aspen Pitkin Employee Housing Inc (APEHI), formed in 1978 by community leaders concerned over the escalating loss of attainable housing in the Aspen area, is a non-profit Colorado corporation, and recognized as a charitable organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  APEHI’s current mission is to continue to promote the preservation and development of attainable housing in the entire Roaring Fork Valley. In other words, good housing cheap!

Who We Are

Our efforts began before the creation of the Aspen Pitkin County Housing Authority and we continue to strive to provide quiet, non-political leadership and facilitation.  It is the philosophy of the organization that effectiveness is gained through judicious action, rather than controversy and conflict.  The organization works under the leadership of a board of directors whose members possess the diversity of skills needed to fulfill APEHI’s mission.

Our History

APEHI constructed and operates the 33-unit Hunter Longhouse in Aspen, a popular rental known for its strong community and commitment to affordability. Beyond this, APEHI has facilitated collaboration among public entities, developers, management companies, and property owners to shape the region’s housing landscape. One such effort led to Trainors Landing in Aspen (formerly Barbee Family Partners Property), where APEHI helped secure land use entitlements for an employee housing neighborhood.

Continuing its mission to create inclusive, community-driven living spaces, APEHI helped bring Red Hill Lofts to life in Carbondale, Colorado — redefining community living with a focus on equity and vibrancy.

APEHI’s impact also includes helping establish the Roaring Fork Valley chapter of Habitat for Humanity, introducing co-housing to Aspen through community workshops that led to Common Ground, a locally rooted co-housing community. Additionally, APEHI completed preliminary analysis for a potential land exchange between Pitkin County and the U.S. Forest Service, exploring attainable housing opportunities at the Forest Service’s Administrative Offices site in Aspen.
